BMX竞速被国际奥委会纳入2008年奥运会正式比赛项目。
小轮车学名叫BMX，是上世纪60年代在美国诞生、在国外流行了四十年的休闲运动，分为竞速、平花、街式三种。从诞生到2004年6月，无论 是在国外还是在国内，BMX一直是专属于青少年的运动，类似于极限运动，以街头的方式存在，徘徊于竞技体育范畴之外。中国人知道BMX大约是在上世纪的最 后十年，在大多数人的印象中，BMX无非是一群半大小子，半站在轮子极小的自行车上，放着正路不走，偏偏要上台阶、爬斜坡、攀栅栏，把自己摔得鼻青脸肿。
无论是街式还是平花，街头确实是BMX的主要活动区域，也是进入中国之后的主要表现形式。像以街头为场地的其他休闲运动一样，BMX从头到脚都散发着 “酷”的味道。器材专业、装备专业、架势专业，就算动作不够专业，但是一定要有专业的表情，至少投入精神足够专业。在街头，或者小型广场，不难遇到具有以 上特点的群类，他们或者独自苦练技术，摔倒了再爬起来，或者三五车友聚集，切磋交流技艺，但是在他们中间，你很难发现女孩的身影。BMX是男孩子的世界。
但是小轮车竞速平日里却难得一见，因为这需要特殊的场地，一般是在坎坷的泥地上进行的。大多数情况下，中国观众只能在电视里一睹小轮车竞速的风采 ———一群孩子骑着小轮车，拥挤在忽高忽低的泥地上，争先恐后，为了第一个到达终点，难免发生冲撞，结果扑倒在泥地里、爬起来一身泥的景象随时可见。小轮 车竞速最好看的场面是，从一个高点冲向另一个高点，然后飞向空中。从那些孩子的眼中，你看不出丝毫恐惧，而是奋勇向前的坚定。
